This is a brief description of the ongoing seawall work at 100 Brighton Ave., Bolinas. The temporary beach access stairs are now completed and open to the public for access to and from Bolinas Beach. The contractor for the seawall project is the Valentine Corporation from San Rafael, CA. They are constructing a temporary trestle directly in front of the existing concrete seawall. This trestle is to allow pile driving equipment to operate on and not be impacted by the ocean tides, and also to keep it off of the beach.

The temporary trestle will first be used to install a temporary steel sheet pile retaining wall that is located on the landward side of the existing concrete retaining wall which is presently just landward of the existing concrete seawall with a wooden fence on its top. The purpose of this temporary steel sheet pile retaining wall is to provide stability protection to the upper slope and residence while work proceeds seaward of this temporary retaining wall.

Next, the deteriorating existing seawall boardwalk and concrete retaining behind it will be removed, and then a new steel sheet pile seawall will be driven behind the existing concrete seawall. At the completion of this new steel sheet pile seawall, the existing outer concrete seawall will be removed. This work will be accomplished with equipment operating on top of the temporary constructed trestle.

Next the new concrete stairways will be constructed on the west end of the seawall along with the placement of stone revetment along the west end at the bluff edge to protect this area from ongoing erosion. The rock that has already been removed in front of the existing concrete seawall will not be replaced.

Then the new steel sheet pile seawall will be finished with the construction of its steel walers, anchor tiebacks drilled and grouted into the upland soils, and finalized with a poured in place reinforced concrete cap system. When this is completed a new concrete retaining wall will be constructed behind the new seawall, and the temporary upslope steel sheet pile retaining wall will be removed.

Next there will be the placement of new compacted backfill between the new seawall and new retaining wall and a fence and trellis system will be installed on top of this new retaining wall. Then a new concrete boardwalk will be poured in place on top of the backfill between the new seawall and retaining wall. Then temporary steel sheet piles will be driven seaward of the new seawall in order to provide protection from the incoming tides and waves for the concrete sculpturing of the seawall’s face in order to give the seawall the appearance of a natural bluff face.

The temporary trestle that was constructed at the start of the project will then be removed, and the installation of the boardwalk access seating, handrails and guardrails will take place. Then the sculptured concrete fascia on the seawall will take place which will take approximately a month. When this is completed the temporary sheet piles for protecting this sculpturing work will be removed. Finally, the east side access, steel stairways and furnishings will be installed with the removal of the temporary beach access stairways. Lastly the landscaping will be installed, Brighton Avenue including its ramp will be restored, and the contractor will demobilize from the site.
