Downtown Parking Permit Information

Downtown Bolinas Parking Permits

The Bolinas Community Public Utility District (BCPUD) issues permits to downtown residents who are eligible to be exempted from the overnight parking restriction for sections of Brighton Avenue and Wharf Road in Downtown Bolinas.

In May, 2025, occupants of homes in the restricted areas were provided parking permits exempting them from the parking restriction posted as “no overnight parking between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. without a permit” (note that the permit does NOT pertain to vehicles over 22 feet in length). All available permits have been distributed. If you are eligible for a permit and do not have one, the BCPUD can place you on a waiting list and provide you with a permit once one becomes available.

Please contact the BCPUD office at 415-868-1224, or by email at bcpud@bcpud.org, to inquire about the program, ask to be added to the wait list, or if you need assistance with your current permit.

Permits are to be issued only to residents living in properties on the residential side of Brighton Avenue and a selected portion of Wharf Road. Permits are managed and issued by BCPUD and enforced by the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. Any vehicle parked in this area not showing a permit decal on their vehicle will be subject to a parking citation. Vehicles with a disabled license plate or placard are exempt.

All permits will require renewal every 2 years.

Remember: we do not issue parking permits for visitor/guest vehicles.  Any vehicle that does not display a valid residential parking permit must comply with posted overnight restrictions.

Please see the Map below for restriction locations and information.  Reminder, the orange zone on the Map represents the 2:00am – 5:00am restricted zones.  The parking permit is only valid within these zones.

PERMIT INFORMATION
Residential Parking Permits are only valid within the specified residential permit area indicated on the parking map.  Parking during the hours of 2:00am and 5:00am within these specified areas, without a valid permit displayed inside your vehicle, will result in a parking ticket.

Residential Parking Permits do not guarantee that street parking will be available or that parking enforcement will be available on any given day.

Residential Parking Permits exempt the vehicle from posted overnight restrictions only.  Residential Parking Permits do not excuse your vehicle from any other State Vehicle code or Marin County ordinance, including MCC 15.36.030/ CVC 22651(k): continuous parking on a roadway in excess of 72 hours.  Your vehicle may be cited and/or towed if it is found in violation of parking in excess of 72 hours.

Please note that any vehicle that does not display a residential parking permit, parked overnight in a permit zone, could be cited even if that vehicle is parked in front of that resident’s driveway (note that a vehicle is parked on the public roadway if even one tire is on that public roadway). The vehicle must be fully off the public roadway to avoid a citation.  In addition, residents should avoid parking their vehicle in a manner that obstructs the sidewalk.

Trailers (including boat trailers), Passenger Cars, and Motorcycles are not exempt.  All vehicles, except for vehicles with disabled plates or placards, must display a residential parking permit if parked in the restricted area overnight.  Per California Vehicle Code 630, trailers, passenger cars and motorcycles are considered vehicles.  The permit restriction applies to ALL vehicles.

Residential Parking Permits are assigned to specific vehicles and may not be used in any other vehicle.  Using or displaying a permit in a vehicle to which it was not assigned shall cause the permit to be rendered void.

Permits are to be placed on the inside of the vehicle.  Place your permits on the lower left of the windshield, do not cover visibility of the VIN.  Permits must be on the vertical surface so that the information can be easily viewed and visible.  Do not affix the permit on the inside of a tinted window or place on the dashboard.  It will not be considered visible and will not be honored.  Improper placement of the permit or non-visible permits may result in a citation.

It is your responsibility to advise the BCPUD of any changes to your vehicles.  We will need to verify that your new vehicle meets the requirements before we can issue a replacement permit.  Please be prepared to provide the make, model, color, and license plate number of your new vehicle, as well as a copy of the current registration for the new vehicle.
