Senate Bill 1383 – Diversion of Organic Materials from Landfill
As of January 1, 2022, all residents and businesses in California are required to divert organic material out of landfill by composting food scraps, plant trimmings and unlined soiled paper products rather than placing these items in the garbage.
What does this mean for you?
It means that all of these organic materials should be placed in your green bin and NOT in your grey bin for collection by Recology Sonoma Marin. Recology will then service your green bin and take your organic material to a compost facility. This will help reduce methane emissions from landfills and store carbon in the soil via compost.

General Information for Garbage Pick-Up in Bolinas:
- Residential trash, recycling and organic waste collection is on Thursdays, commercial collection on Wednesdays. Collection is a day later when the following holidays occur; Christmas and New Year’s.
- The current residential rate for a 32-gallon can is $31.83 per month, and $24.62 per month for a 20-gallon can (larger cans are available. Check with company for prices). Weekly curbside recyclables collection is included at no extra charge. Please use the following guidelines for recyclables: Place all of your recyclables together into your recycling container. Include all paper, beverage glass, metal cans & plastic containers. Cardboard may be broken down if needed to fit in recycle container. Do not force materials into recycling container. It may not empty completely. No need to separate materials. Please be sure all containers are emptied of food and liquid prior to recycling.
- A weekly curbside organic waste pickup program is included at no extra charge. If you have larger amounts of green waste (yard and tree trimmings) than can be disposed of in the 96 gallon green waste container provided as part of your basic subscription, you can drop off your clean yard waste at the Resource Recovery site at 25 Olema-Bolinas Road for a small fee. All food scraps go into the green organic waste can.
